Armytage Family

[edit]

The claim the station was built by and for Sir George Armytage of Kirklees Hall is doubtful. Sir George appears to have been a director of the rival Huddersfield & Manchester Railway instead and possibly wasn't even residing at Kirklees Hall at the time the line was planned in the 1830s -- instead he had leased the hall to Conservative politician Henry Wickham Wickham, who became a director of the Manchester & Leeds Railway by 1845 (and may therefore have benefited from having a station nearby). The early chairmen of the Manchester & Leeds Railway were James Wood and then Henry Houldsworth of Manchester. The stations on the line were almost certainly selected to serve nearby towns and cities, as they were located close to existing turnpike roads -- in the case of Cooper Bridge, the Birstall & Huddersfield Turnpike passed within a few yards of the station. 82.12.192.171 (talk) 21:12, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
